This week marked the beginning of the Easter season of Lent, a significant time in the Catholic calendar. On Monday, we prepared for Ash Wednesday with the tradition of burning of the palms. Ms Taylor and Ms Prince, with the help of their Year 8 RE class burned the palm leaves from last years Palm Sunday service, to create the Ash for the upcoming Mass and Liturgies.
Shrove Tuesday’s tradition of cooking pancakes had the Executive Team preparing pancakes to share with students and staff on the MacKillop lawns. It was a great opportunity to come together as a community to celebrate in our Catholic tradition with some delicious morning tea!
On Ash Wednesday, the Year 8s and 12s gathered for the first Mass of the year, led by Father Shibu, and participated in the tradition of the marking of the ashes. Thank you to our Year 12 Stude Leaders, our wonderful choir and Fr Shibu for leading our service. Year 7, 9, 10 and 11 students gathered as WB groups or Year Levels to celebrate a Liturgy and ash marking.
Lent is seen as a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Through prayer we come closer to God so that we are better able to live justly as Jesus teaches us. Fasting joins us in solidarity with the poor who often have no choice but to go without basic essentials. Giving to the poor or ‘almsgiving’ is a sign of our commitment to justice and our thanks for all that God has given us. As in the past, TMC supports the work of Caritas Australia through Project Compassion during the season of Lent. Student driven fundraisers are a strong part of our culture, and we look forward to supporting our students as they again contribute what they can for a worthy cause.
